Round Tables on the Territorial Strategy for the Urban Area of Sremska Mitrovica and the Municipalities of the Sremski District

Two-day thematic round tables dedicated to the preparation of the territorial strategy for the urban area of the City of Sremska Mitrovica and the municipalities of Ruma, Stara Pazova, Irig, Pećinci, Šid and Inđija commenced today in Sremska Mitrovica as part of the EU INTEGRA programme.

This European Union programme, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry for European Integration, supports the application of the integrated territorial approach to development in Serbia. Through the component implemented by UNOPS, local self-governments receive technical assistance for the preparation of territorial strategies and the strengthening of capacities for sustainable development planning.

"Srem is an area with strong development potential, but also shared challenges. This is why it is important to plan future development through cooperation and dialogue, taking into account the needs and opportunities of the entire territory. This process provides us with an opportunity to define common priorities and projects that can contribute to sustainable development and a better quality of life for citizens. We particularly value the support of the European Union, the Ministry for European Integration and UNOPS through the EU INTEGRA programme, as well as our partnership with the Regional Development Agency Srem," said Danica Nedić, Deputy Mayor of Sremska Mitrovica.

Analyses conducted so far have highlighted the significant development potential of the Srem region, ranging from its favourable geographical position and developed economy and agriculture to its rich natural resources and cultural heritage. At the same time, a number of common challenges have been identified, including demographic changes, the need to improve social services and the importance of ensuring a more balanced development across the territory.

Viktor Veljović, Capacity Development Manager within the EU INTEGRA programme implemented by UNOPS, recalled that the programme builds on the results of the EU PRO Plus programme, through which the integrated sustainable territorial development model was introduced in Serbia. EU INTEGRA continues this approach through the preparation of territorial strategies for ten additional territories across the country.

"Integrated territorial development enables local self-governments to jointly plan and develop projects that respond to the specific needs of citizens and the development potential of the territory. These thematic round tables provide an opportunity to further refine the proposed analysis of the current situation and needs through discussions with a broader group of local experts and relevant stakeholders," Veljović stated.

Over the two days, participants in the round tables will discuss topics including urban regeneration, green transition, sustainable urban mobility, innovative and smart economy, social development and development governance.
